Every month, Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue shares stories from the front lines of dog rescue in Hawaiʻi. From life-saving medical cases and heartwarming dog adoptions in Hawaii to volunteer efforts and rescue updates from the Big Island, The WAG offers an inside look at the lives your support is helping change.
Wow, it has felt non-stop.
If there's one word that describes June at Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue, it's busy. The phone never seemed to stop ringing. Every day brought another call, another dog in need, another family looking for help, and another decision to make.
What many people don't see is everything happening behind the scenes at a Hawaii dog rescue. The emergency calls, the paperwork, the grant applications, the coordination with our veterinary partners, the search for available foster homes, and the countless conversations it takes to move each case forward. Animal rescue in Hawaiʻi is so much more than what makes it to social media.
When someone calls us about a dog, our first thought isn't, "Can we do this?" It's, "How do we get this dog care?" We immediately look for space, reach out to our foster team if we're full, and begin putting the pieces together. Somehow, through the commitment of our staff, veterinarians, volunteers, foster families, and supporters, we always find a way.
This month reminded us that saving lives is never the work of one person. It's the result of a generous community that quietly shows up, often without recognition, because they believe every dog deserves a chance. From the person who makes the first phone call to the foster family who opens their home, every act of kindness creates another opportunity for a rescue dog in Hawaiʻi to find safety, healing, and hope.
Because of you, we were able to impact the lives of many this month. As you read through this month's WAG, we hope you don't just see the dogs whose stories are featured, you see yourself in those stories, too. Every happy ending begins with someone choosing to help.
Mahalo for being part of our ʻohana.

June was filled with milestones worth celebrating, and every one of them represents lives changed.
The numbers tell part of the story. The people behind them tell the rest.

Every rescue has a story that stays with you. This month, that story belongs to Coco.
When a community member spotted a stray dog dragging his front leg, they knew something wasn't right. His leg had developed painful sores from repeatedly dragging across the ground, and no one knows how long he had been living that way. They made the call, and our team immediately got to work asking the same question we always do:
How do we get this dog care?
Once Coco was safely in our care and evaluated by our veterinary team, a difficult decision had to be made. Amputation is never our first choice. We know it comes with its own challenges, and whenever possible, we work to preserve a dog's limb. But sometimes the kindest decision is also the hardest one.
For Coco, removing his injured leg meant giving him something he hadn't had in a long time, a life without constant pain.
Just one day after surgery, the difference was already noticeable. While his recovery is only beginning, so is the next chapter of his life. Over the coming weeks, Coco will learn just how resilient dogs can be as he adjusts to life on three legs before becoming available for adoption in Hawaiʻi.
Stories like Coco's remind us why dog rescue in Hawaiʻi matters. One phone call. One decision to help. One community willing to come together. That's how lives are changed, one dog at a time.
Not every dog adoption journey follows a straight path.
Daisy, formerly known as Peeps, was once returned after struggling in a home with livestock. While it may have felt discouraging in the moment, it simply meant her perfect home was still out there waiting.
Today, Daisy is thriving on Oʻahu, and her newest role is one no one could have predicted, she's become the favorite bed for her family's kitten.
It's a sweet reminder that rescue dogs don't just need a home, they need the right home.
Every dog deserves a family that understands them, celebrates them, and loves them for exactly who they are. Sometimes it just takes a little longer to find.

As we move into July, one thing remains certain: the need continues.
The calls won't stop, and neither will our commitment to answering them.
Right now, our greatest needs are volunteers and donations. Whether you choose to give your time, make a financial gift, share one of our adoptable dogs, or tell someone about Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue, you are helping us continue our mission.
Every act of kindness matters.
Every foster home creates space for another dog in need.
Every donation helps provide life-saving medical care.
Every volunteer strengthens our ability to serve our community.
Together, we're saving lives, one dog at a time.
Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue is a nonprofit Hawaii dog rescue dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs across Hawaiʻi. If you're looking to adopt a rescue dog in Hawaii, become a foster family, volunteer with a Big Island dog rescue, or make a donation to support life-saving veterinary care, we'd love to welcome you into our ʻohana.
From all of us at Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue, thank you for standing beside us. We are honored to have you as part of our community, and we can't wait to share more stories of hope in next month's WAG.
