Medical Assistance Application
Need help paying for emergency vet care?
When your pet gets sick or hurt suddenly, the vet bills can be overwhelming. Our Medical Assistance Program helps Big Island families who are struggling to afford emergency veterinary care. We provide grants for emergency and life-saving treatment ONLY, paid directly to your vet, when you cannot cover the full cost on your own.
This program is funded in part by the John R. Peterson Foundation and benefits vulnerable and underserved communities of Hawaii.
Program Information
Who Can Apply
You may qualify if:
You live on Big Island
Your pet has a sudden illness or injury (not a long-term health problem)
Your pet has been seen by a vet and has a diagnosis
You are not a breeder or rescue organization
You are going through financial hardship
Your pet may be surrendered or humanely euthanized as an alternative to receiving care due to cost

Emergency and urgent veterinary care
Up to $2,000 per household per year
Situations where your pet may be euthanized or surrendered due to hardship
What We Don't Cover:
Routine care (checkups, vaccines)
Ongoing or chronic conditions
Spay/neuter only (but we have other programs for that!)

PART 6: YOUR PROMISES
By typing your name below, I promise:
Everything I wrote on this form is true.
If my pet is not fixed, I will get my pet fixed (spayed or neutered) within 90 days after my pet gets better, unless the vet says it is not safe.
I will tell Aloha Ilio how my pet is doing and send photos when asked.
Aloha Ilio can use my pet's photos and story to help raise money for other pets.
I understand the money goes to the vet, not to me.
I understand Aloha Ilio can say no to my application.

We receive more applications than we can fund, so not everyone will be approved. That said, every application is carefully considered, and we encourage you to apply if you are in need.
