This July reminded us that there isn't just one kind of happy ending.
At Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue, every animal deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, safe, and loved life. We also continue to support Hawaiʻi's cats through spay and neuter services and community outreach because healthier communities begin with accessible care for all companion animals.

One of the most rewarding parts of rescue isn't always finding a new family, sometimes it's helping a beloved pet find their way back to the one they already have.
As a Hawaii dog rescue, we know that one of the best outcomes isn't always an adoption. Sometimes it's helping a beloved pet return safely to the family that never stopped looking.
This July, six dogs were reunited with their owners, each reunion representing a family that no longer had to wonder where their pet was or if they would ever see them again.
Behind every reunion is a community working together. It's the neighbor who stops to help a wandering dog. The person who shares a social media post. The veterinary clinic that scans for a microchip. The volunteer willing to transport a pet. The phone call that connects all the pieces.
These moments remind us that animal welfare is about more than rescue. It's about supporting people, strengthening communities, and doing everything we can to preserve the incredible bond between pets and the families who love them.
For us, every reunion is worth celebrating.
At Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue, our mission goes beyond adoption. We believe prevention, education, and accessible veterinary care are some of the most powerful ways to improve the lives of animals across Hawaiʻi.
While many people know us for our work with dogs, Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue also regularly supports cats through spay and neuter services, community outreach, and educational resources. Affordable spay and neuter services are one of the most effective ways to reduce pet overpopulation and improve the health of dogs and cats throughout Hawaiʻi.
Appointments are currently available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for pets in HOVE, Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa, Waimea, and North Kohala, making it easier for pet owners to access affordable veterinary care.
To help reduce transportation barriers, AIR also offers Kona-to-Hilo transportation assistance for qualifying appointments, making these services more accessible for families who need them.
Spaying and neutering a large dog can cost hundreds of dollars more than the same procedure for an average-sized dog, creating a significant financial barrier for many families. Through AIR's affordable large-dog spay and neuter program in West Hawaiʻi, we're helping make this essential care more accessible so more pets can stay healthy and in the homes that love them.

Behind these milestones are countless hours of phone calls, transportation, veterinary appointments, foster coordination, paperwork, volunteer support, and community partnerships. Rescue is never the work of one person, it's the result of many people choosing to help in different ways.
Together, those efforts create stronger communities and brighter futures for Hawaiʻi's animals.
Back in January, our team visited animal control to see which animals we might be able to transfer into our care.
When we arrived, the staff had one request.
"Please take Olive."
There was just one catch.
Olive wasn't alone.
She had three daughters, all around a year old. One of those daughters had already given birth to 10 puppies.
What were we supposed to do?
At Aloha ʻĪlio Rescue, ʻohana means family. And family doesn't leave anyone behind.
So we said yes, to all of them.
Over the following months, Olive's daughters and the puppies received the medical care they needed, were spayed and neutered, and quickly found loving homes.
But Olive stayed.
Day after day, she waited.
With her striking blue eyes, beautiful blue coat, and gentle spirit, she watched other dogs leave for their forever homes while she remained behind. We took her on walks, spoiled her with special treats, and made sure she knew she was loved. Our staff and volunteers gave her extra attention, hoping her perfect family was just around the corner.
Then, in July, they walked through our doors.
From the moment Olive met them, something clicked. She ran joyful circles around the yard, smiled from ear to ear, and made it clear she had found her people. They fell in love with her just as quickly as she fell in love with them.
When they brought Olive home, she settled in beautifully, including with the big dog who had been waiting to welcome her.
There wasn't a dry eye at the rescue as Olive drove away with her forever family.
Stories like Olive's remind us that every dog's journey is different. Some find a home right away. Others need a little more time. But we never stop believing that the right family is out there. That's why we'll continue helping rescue dogs in Hawaiʻi, no matter how long it takes to find the perfect match.
Helping incredible people find the animals who need them and helping those animals find the people who need them, is why we do what we do.
